Overview

Spatium is a redesigned XR streaming experience, created within Armoury Crate (ROG gaming product Connect Center)’s existing design system with a line of hardware products, that enhances gamers’ self-expression and helps them cultivate more intimate connections with viewers.

Market Research

We started off by taking a look at Twitch streaming. After initial research, we found shockingly that it wasn’t Fortnite, League of Legends, or Valorant that was dominating this platform, but this unique feature called “Just chatting”, which involves a high percentage of female users.

Contextual Inquiry

We dived deeper into this category using the keywords of “female streamers” and “just chatting”.

In this section, we found a rising community of gamers, content creators, and entertainers - All reimagining what it means to interact with audiences as a streamer.

We noticed streamers completely customizing their streams through things like digital makeup, lighting displays, avatars, and even customization prototypes to their furniture and chairs.

We also noticed the integration of audience and communities for more exciting and interactive content, turning almost anyone into a creator and redefining what it means to be one.

And finally - the thousands of communities that were being developed through these new forms of media and content.

User Interview

Along with these findings through contextual inquiry, we also validated our hypotheses through interviews with female misfit gamers. We got responses that the key experience for successful and enjoyable streaming is being more spontaneous, having more interactions, having a more casual setting, and the ability for customization.

Ideation Sketch

In this process, we realized the limitation of purely physical products used in response to customization, and decided to go for a direction that empowers gamers through digital and virtual assets, with the hardware support of a line of physical products, including a room sensor to turn streamers’ room into virtual environment, an object sensor to enable interactions, and a control bracelet to track motions.
